Guys: when one issue gets resolved, another one gets in the way. I am wondering if you guys are aware process by which permanent residents can preserve their residence while living outside of the US. I have done some preliminary research and found the form and the procedure, but the conditions seemed to me that I can’t fulfill. Do you guys know someone who has done? Share your experience please; thanks:

Only one way:Obtain a reentry Permit before your departure and come back to the US every 2 years to get a new one.

Faysal,
I believe you are talking about preserving residence for Naturalization purposes, right? The above process suggested by cadel does not preserve residence for naturlaization purposes, but simply preserves permanent residence. I also only studied the form and do know that in order for you to qualify, you first have to have an interrupted period of presence in the US for one year as a PR before you can apply. Also, there are employment and other constraints.

Yeah: You got my point clearly, and also you did some preliminary research on the subject. you are right. there are some constrains on it; like employment, or things that have to do with US national interest ex. being out on spying assignment. I am wondering if there were people who successfully preserve their residence?

Cadel: I am aware of that method, but it does not preserve residence for citizenship purposes it preserves only the greencard. There is another method through which, if approved, you can be out of the country for years without distruption of you continiuos residence. and that is the method i am talking about. I know it exists, but there are contrains that are impossible to meet...

Faysal,
I did a thread search and it seems that these folks were discussing the issue you were facing...

Basically you need to file a N470 to preserve your residency. If you work for a company that is publicly traded on the U.S Stock Exchance, you can file for N470 before you leave. Its required that you file before you leave so you can get an approval. Also you need a Rentry permit which would allow you to be out for 2 years.

You still would have to meet other naturalization requirements like staying 6 months in state, paying taxes etc.

I know its a complicated process to file N470 and you need to have a valid reason.
