What is the rule for that? If we don't want to apply for citizenship, but want to maintain PR status only.

If you do not want to apply for citizenship then you will have to continue to maintain your PR status by staying in Canada for a period of 2 years out of 5. After the first five years have past the same rule applies to maintain your PR status and the time is calculated by counting the days spent in Canada during the last 5 years counting from the present day.

For example, say you became PR of Canada on 1st Jan 2000. The first 5 years finished on the 1st of Jan 2005. Therefore as of today i.e. 23rd Oct 2005 to maintain your PR status you must have lived in Canada for a period of 2 years between 23rd Oct 2000 and today. So the 5 years window is shifting every day.
