Are there specific amount of time that an individual has to stay in a company that processed his/her greencard, after it was approved? thanks

No as long as your sponsor does not bother you. Try to remain polite as much as you can when you leave.

good luck

thank ric2

i spoke to my employer earlier and as what you said, was very polite and then ask them the same and told me that I am basically free and can do almost anything now...

My employer has a "pay back" clause - if I leave within a year, I must pay back all legal fees. If I leave within 2 years, I must pay back 50%. I'm hoping that whatever new job I can get will reimburse the fees.....

They really hook you in I guess.

This seems illegal. If they agree to sponsor you for green card, it is their responsibility to pay the legal fee. You can even 'blackmail' them for their misconduct.

I didn't really think about it - just signed and said "sure". Now of course, it's 2 years later and I'm miserable. Some people have told me to just leave and not pay but I don't want to leave on bad terms.

I asked lawyer how much the fees would be and he guessed around $7000 but he said that was a total guess. Hopefully by the time I am approved (hopefully May - July 2003) the job market will be better and companies will be offering incentives. Either that or I'd better get saving :)
