Hi:

When you are on the job-market, some companies post this question of

Do you have security-clearence?

what is the meaning of this? and is this something one can get done on our own?

(this discussion is not for - how long after we get the GC, can we switch jobs?...so, please restrict the discussions to obtaining Security clearence...thanx in advance!)

This is to be able to work on non-exportable cryptography.
You need security clearance and that is some sort of investigation about you. Don\'t know much more than that.

If you want to minimize unrelated replies it\'s better to use a descriptive title.

the way I understand it.....

Sequrity clearance means that the job need to touch some sort of the classified information. You need to get the clearance in order to get the job. Usually, the third party (DOD or some sort of secret service contractor) will visit your friends and family member for interview. So, it is not a question about “how can you get the clearance”. It is “can you pass the clearance?” For example, in space industry, the design of space shuttle is highly (or top) secret. if you want to get into a team for shuttle design, the DOD will dig very deep of your background and your families\' to make sure that you may or will not violate the code of rules. Most of the time, the chance for a GC holder to get a security clearance required job is slim. Even for a naturalized citizen, the chance is still not good enough. Sound frustrated but that is the way it is.

A friend of mine needed security clearance to get a job at the Pentagon. GC holders were not even eligible for that. So I think it largerly depends on where you apply and what kind of job it is. In her case she had to pass a series of psyche tests, a lie detector and something else. She didn\'t pass and she is American. But again, this was Pentagon, maybe it is different elsewhere.

I heard only "US Citizens" can only obtain security clearance.

I applied for a job, which requires security clearance.
Recruiter told me that I should be "US citizen" to pass security clearance. Pl correct if there is some thing wrong.

It depends

Not all of the "clearance required" jobs are closed to the GC holder. There are different kind of level of clearances. For the lowest level, a GC holder is (or may be) able to pass. Yet, at this date, especially after the terrible sep-11 crisis. The chance is not looking promising. The door is closed even before you can see the light.

So, the recruiter is saying the right thing that "you should try another kind of job". Otherwise, you may end up in the same result as it before. I mean, there is no use to apply for a job that you have very very slim chance.

Hope this is helpful.

I think that is the case with government jobs, but you are forgetting that some telecom and aerospace companies require security clearance but that does not mean the same thing.
