I have a question aboute "Part 1. Your Name" on the N-400 form.
My wife is applying for U.S. citizenship. Her Green Card has her first name,
middle initial (first letter of her father's name), and married last name. Her U.S. IDs (driver's license, etc.) have her first name and married last name i.e.
no middle initial. She wants to remove the middle initial so that her
naturalization certificate and hence passport won't have it.
My questions are:
1. For Part 1.A "Your current legal name" - does she include her middle
initial? Her birth certificate lists her father's name - but there is no
concept of "Middle Initial" in that document. Same applies for her
current passport - it lists her father's name as the middle name.
As mentioned, her other U.S. IDs don't have the middle initial - we
want consistency among all the IDs.
2. For Part D.1 "Would you like to legally change your name"?
Should she answer "Yes" to remove the middle initial (if she put it
in Part 1.A). Or, should she answer "No" (if she did not put the middle
initial in Part 1.A)?
3. If in Part D.1 she has to answer "Yes" and put her married last name
and first name (no middle initial), will a court order be needed? If not,
does it delay the application approval?
4. If it's a hassle to do a name change to remove the middle initial, I assume
her naturalization certificate will have this initial. After naturalization, will
her U.S. passport have it as well? If so, will the inconsistency in the
name between the U.S. passport and other U.S. IDs cause a problem?
Thanks.
