Since someone was kind enough to bring this up , how does one go about this process? Simply show up at the local SSN office with the old card, passport and GC and ask for a new card with no restrictions?
Thanks in advance.

Do they issue you the card immediately or would mail them to you after you show up at the local office? How long does it take for them to mail it to you?
Thanks.

They do it the same way they did it when you get your SSN
before getting GC. They take your application (SS-5)
and will mail your the new card

On the other hand, I did hear somesone tell the story how
they got SSN card. They said when SSA issued their card
and the SSA clerk also picked a seal and was going to
print "Not valid for work" on the card so that they
pleaded :"Please don't print that" and the
SSA clerk did not.

Maybe once upon a time, they gave you a card
right at the same time you applied for one.
