Police Certificates

Folks,

My 140 is approved and case is with NVC. I have a question on police clearance certificate. Since birth I have lived at many places. 25 years at my native place (and this is the permanent address on passport), 5 years in Mumbai, 3 years in Chicago and 3 years in Detroit.

Do I need to get the police certificates from all these places or just the native place (permanent address)? Your help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Averma.

averma,

Assuming that you are in the US now (3 years in Chicago and Detriot each..) you just need to get the PCC from Indian consulate in US. You do not need get it from India (luckily).

alren, how long does it take to get the clearance from the consulate here? Thanks.

Depends on where your passport was issued.

I applied for mine in San Francisco (where I got my passport renewed) and it just takes a day. If the passport were to be issued in India then they would've sent the case to India and it can take upto 30 days.
Check with your local Indian consulate.

Hey folks: I've been trying to reach the US Embassy in Washington (I'm under their jurisidiction) ... but no one answers the phone numbers listed for the consular section. At least they didn't Tuesday and today (yesterday was Republic Day and a holiday). My passport was issued by the Embassy and it would be helpful to know the processing times involved. My I-824 just got approved, and if all goes smoothly, I should have an interview in about 6 months or so.

I know that the PCC should be issued within the last 6 months. I'm going to be in DC in March and thought I'd pay a personal visit to the Embassy then. But some concrete information before then would be helpful.

If anyone has any furhter information from the Embassy, please post it here or pm me. Or if you know that their phone numbers have changed from the ones on the website: Tel: (202) 939-9806/9832.

Thanks and good luck to everyone!

I've found the San Francisco consulate to be extremely efficient! I handed in my application earlier today @ 12:45pm (they accepted it even though I was late and the counter officially closes at 12:30pm) and it was ready @ 4:30pm. :D
I had renewed my passport at this consulate about 2 years ago and that helped.

I guess you meant Indian embassy (not US embassy) Quite a few earlier posts have discussed this issue. Here is one:

The best way to get a Police Clearance in India for a person who is living abroad should contact follow the procedure:

1. Locate the Embassy of India website in the country of living and try to download a form for Miscellaneous Services.
2. Fill up the form, this form will be for several services, including name change, address change, police clearance certificate and so on. Fill only where it is required.
3. Do not fail to include your original passport (only if you need the stamping on your passport) along with the copies of all the pages of the passport, travelling visa documents.
4. Enclose Money Order for the amount mentioned in the form (from USA, I enclosed $20 for normal service, if you wanted to have a faster service, call them and ask how much money you needed to attach for Expedited services along with the Speed Post charges)
5. Write a letter indicating your name, address and the purpose of requesting the Police Clearance Certificate. DO NOT FORGET THIS. They will provide PCC only for a particular reason.
6. Send it to the Indian Embassy and for normal process it should take 4-6 weeks and Expedited Process it may take lesser than one week. But always keep calling them and talk to them politely, they can help you in getting things faster.

I personally would hesitate to visit any Indian consulate or Embassy, but would rather would send by courier services. If your passport is issued in USA the PCC could be issued immediately.

Thanks

Thanks guys. I'll keep trying to get someone on the phone. I'm loathe to send a passport in the mail not knowing how long it will be away from me. And yes, I did mean the Indian Embassy. :)

GS28,
I got mine by mail and it was pretty efficient. The whole process took 10-12 days from when I sent it to when I received it back.
Add 20 fees + 20 telex charges per person and return charges for express mail.

I tend to agree because of the following reasons
1. Have found the consulate to be pretty courteous (contrary to my pre-concieved notions) during passport issuing and PCC issuing
2. In my case they made a mistake twice - in my surname and upon pointing out corrected mine and made the same mistake on my fathers surname. This would have meant two time consuming delays if it were by mail. However, to their credit, they did it fast (2 correctins in 20 minutes!)
3. Personally am a bit paranoid about leaving the passport to the mercy of mail/courier services

Where was your passport issued?

Was your PP issued from Indian Embassy in D.C. or other Indian consulates in the US? In that case, you should send the PP along with the application. PCC and the stamp in the PP will be done in couple of days. In the letter, do not forget to mention the purpose of the PCC - for obtaining US immigrant visa.

If your PP was issued in India, then the Indian Embassy will take ~ 30 days to complete the inquiry. In that case, send copies of all pages of your passport with the application. The embassy will contact you when they are ready to issue the PCC. Send the PP at this stage.

I too am always scared to send my PP anywhere by courier/DHL/FedEx etc. However there is no choice but to send it anyways and track it both ways!

Good Luck.

Well, finally the consulate will send the passports with your immigrant visas by a courier service.
You might as well get used to the idea that you and your passport will be separated :-).

:D LOL. True. However, it's one thing to be separated from it for, say, a week (like when one has to get visas to travel to Europe, for instance), and another for a whole month or longer. If there is, God forbid, an emergency at home, it makes a difference when the PP is away for a week, vs. a month.

Thanks for the above responses as well. My PP was issued by the Indian Embassy in Washington. From all that I've gathered here, it shouldn't take too long to get the PCC. I'll still do it in Feb-March, however. I'm at the very beginning of the CP process (824 just got approved last week) so it's best to wait to see how fast it is going. Thanks and good luck to all on here.

You're right, I had the same concerns about emergency. But then in such a case, I figured I will drive down to the embassy and retrieve the passport. I am sure they will be considerate enough.
Anyway my mind was toughened by the 12-14 weeks it was away at the dept of state for H1B revalidation! So the 10 days at Indian embassy seems a piece of cake

GS28, since your PP was issued by a Indian consulate in US, it should not take more than 10 days to get the PCC and the PP back along with that. Don't worry, that is normal.
