Hi,

My GC interview is expected to be in June/July at Chennai consulate. We applied for PCC in Chicago Indian Embassy on March 15th, 2005. My wife went to India on April 1st, 2005 and she is still in India.

Today, I went to the Embassy to collect the PCCs for both me and my wife (Since we have to wait to collect after 45 days from applying date). They gave the PCC for me with out any problem. For my wife, they have given a letter stating the following on the same letter head instead of PCC since she is not here in US right now and I can not show her passport.

Madam,
This is to inform that your request for issue of a Police Clearance Certificate has been approved. You are requested to present your passport to this consulate for the same.

Yours faithfully

ASSISTANT CONSULAR OFFICER.

Is this enough for the consular interview? What are your suggestions?

Thank you.

Did you present a copy of the passport at the time of applying for the PCC for your wife? If yes, then i dont see why it would be a problem. Because once the PCC has been approved, they either mail it to you or u can get the same in person. I dont think it really matters if that person has recently left the US to india or not. Strange why the indian embassy would issue such a letter.

Hi Peter,

Yes, We presented a copy of the passport at the time of applying for the PCC for my wife.

But when they issue the PCC, they needed the actual passport since , they need to stamp in my wife's passport endorsement of PCC issuance with consular officer signature.
Infact, They did the same in my passport also. Is this a normal procedure?
What should I do now?

Thank you.

Honestly, I do not see anything strange about this letter.

As the PCC is stamped in the passport, what else can they do without her passport?

Did they mention her passport number in this letter? If yes, it should be OK as in case of any questions at the consulate, you can explain the situation.

If not, then perhaps it would be a good idea for you to obtain another letter stating her passport number as well.

At the same time, since she is in India, also obtain PCCs from the local police station and the Regional Passport Office in India (for her), just to be on the safer side.

Yes, this is the normal procedure.

GCChaahiye,

What should I do now? Is it OK if I submit/show this letter instead PCC to the chennai consular officer?

What do you suggest?

Thank you

GCChaahiye,

Sorry I did not see your erliar reply.

<Did they mention her passport number in this letter?>
NO

<If not, then perhaps it would be a good idea for you to obtain another letter stating her passport number as well>
Infact, I asked for it. they say can not change the format just for my sake.

We will try this, Do I think we get her PCCs from India. Is it valid since she is US resident?

Thank you.

I sincerely believe that the Chicago Consulate SHOULD change their format to include the Passport Number as well since there can be more than one person with the same first and last names in which case, the letter will have no meaning.

The PCC letter issued by the New York Consulate INCLUDES the passport number as well.

The procedure and formats should be the same for all the Indian Consulates, atleast in the US.

You may try speaking to the Chief Consular Officer and not any "lay-officer" at the Chicago Consulate. If necessary, mention to them that New York mentions the passport numbers.

Also try obtaining PCCs from India as I mentioned earlier. These would certainly be valid even though she is US Resident.

GCChaahiye,

Thank you very much for your reply. I will try again talking to the consular officer to get the passport number in the letter.

Just in case, If I could not get it done from these guys, and If I get the PCCs from India, then we will be fine for the interview right? (Infact it is easy for us to get it in India) and the US Consular officer will not insist on the PCC from Indian embassy in US for US resident, right?

Thank you again for you inputs.

I would say, that she MUST obtain PCCs from India and along with this letter from Chicago, she should be fine.

I do not foresee any problems because of this.

If she has PCCs from India, then incase of any questions about the letter from Chicago, you could always explain what happened.Since your wife left the US before the PCC was approved, there is no way to get her passport stamped and for the formal PCC letter.

Since you say it is easier to get the PCCs in India, just go and get them. She will need them.
