Police Certificate in India
If you are in the USA, the Indian Consulate will issue the certificate. If you are, as in most cases, in India, please visit the nearest regional passport office. They will ask for an application (the form is available in the passport office), application fee, two recent photographs, two proofs of residence and of course the passport itself. If they had already done a police verifcation when they had issued your passport, then they will most likely issue the certificate within two days. If not, they will send it to the police deptt (you need not do anything) and this may take between three and four weeks. The procedure is fairly straight forward.
The certificate itself is separate but they will also stamp a one line statement on your passport that the certificate has been issued.
The passport police verification is valid for one year.
