Pls Help - H1 extn pending - 240 days elapsed from expiration date

My visa expired in nov \'00.
Just before that applied for h1 extn ...(I have 3 more yrs to go)
still pending in calif... and my 240 days grace period expiring soon.
Can I continue to stay in US ? or
Should I leave US ?
Guru jeess.. Please comment.

Is there a way I could stay here but not working actively
(I mean not earning) during the pending approval period ?
