My EAD will expire in 11/02. I have the following questions.

I have a valid H1 till 2003.Does the employer automatically switch the employee from a H1 to EAD without the employee's consent or any forms need to be filled out by the employee for this purpose.

Are there any change in the application forms to be filed for the renewal of EAD or the same old form is used.

when should I apply for the renewal of EAD at VSC. Please share your experience.

Technically you should apply for renewal of EAD 90 days before expiration. As long as your process is ongoing you can get off your H1 and work on your EAD. This is between you and your employer.
However, to be on the safe side you would be better off renewing your H1B just in case something goes wrong with your process. That way you have something to fall back on.
It normally takes less than 90 days for renewal of EAD but if you ask an IIO they will tell you to apply atleast 90 days in advance.
