Along with us, we applied for our 8 year old son's GC also. Now after the approval, is it mandatory to take him to INS office for stamping ?

Stamping

I think your son's GC will arrive directly. Below a certain age one does not need the stamping. A welcome letter is sent to the person along with the GC. I think your son may qualify for that.
