Well in order for me to attend college i need proof of my legal status in the US. I wasnt born here, but i am a permanent resident, the only problem is that i lost all my documents (Alien Registration Card,Social Security Card and other ID's). I went to the Social Security Office today nearby my hometown in Passaic NJ, and tried to apply for a replacement SS card. The lady that attended me asked me for 2 proofs of ID, 1 with a Photo and another that says i am legally here. Well i had my High School Id and i showed her that but the only thing that i had that showed legal status here was an outdated passport from my home country of Peru. Due to the fact that it was outdated, although it contained my Alien Registration number, it was not able to be used so I had no choice to leave the office and come back later when i had a more current proof. Since I am now 18, I wanted to apply for a citizenship in the US, but that also requires my Alien Registration card. I have nothing, except an outdated passport, so I dont know what step I should take in getting everything back. As far as I see it, the first thing for me to do is to apply for a new Alien Registration card, but from what i've heard, it is going to be a long while before i ever get it. Around a 1 year wait. Is there anything else that I could do, that can get me my papers the quickest? Thank you in advance.
