Please help! I'm On a 'non-degree' DS-2019 J-1, & have been offered a chance of a lifetime masters degree course.

I need to change my visa. Can J-1's be for a degree, or will I need an F-1?

I think this can be done with a I-539 (Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status) in the US without leaving, is that right?

I am in Boston. Is there a webpage which details the process?

Thank you so much for your reply!

Has anyone graduated with a degree on a J-1? (bachelors or masters)

Is it possible?

On my DS-2019, in part "4 Exchange Visitor Category", it says "Student Non-Degree".

I have seen other DS-2019 examples on the net that have "Student Doctorate", and I think "Student Masters" is also possible.

I am on an exchange program where I pay fees to my home university, and the US student pays fees to their university in America.

But one department is saying that is not good enough? As though there is some law that says that I must pay tuition again, if I want a degree? I think they are mistaken, assuming that just because it is not the usual way, it is not possible.

Please help.
