I will be eligible to apply for GC end of this month after being in asylee status for a year. Do I have to use my lawyer to adjust my status or is this something I can do for myself? Thanks in advance.

Your mileage may vary, so please proceed carefully.

I got bad advice from a lawyer 8 years ago and that delayed my GC by at least 4 years. Last year, I finally applied on my own (filled out all the paperwork myself) after talking to some lawyers because I saw no reason to pay someone a lot of money to fill out a single form.

I am happy to say that it worked out for me. If you have a straight-forward case, save yourself some money and do it yourself. But if you have any complications (arrest/convictions) you might want to talk to your lawyer.

if there nothing special in your case you should not hire a lawyer, waste of money, I was gonna hire one and he wanted 500 dollars, if you read carefully in the USCIS website they explian in detail what to submit with your application....at the end I did not hire him and I save that money, if later you get an unusual RFE from USCIS then you should seek legal help, but not for the I 485.

Guacho.

do it with lawyer .it might cost you from $500 to $1000 and more. however it is easy paperwork. If you make a small mistake .u will deal with a lot of paperwork and you will waste your time.In this country something done by lawyer is taken seriously ;) Never deal with USCIS without lawyer.

Don't waste your money.Do it by your own.The application is very easy to be filled out if you can understand, speak and write english...If you have any question in the application form ,feel free to come back to this free forum you will be helped out...Wantmygcnow had been advised by his lawyer to bomb uscis with 119 pages of RFE and got GC approved after 4 months while my 2 pages RFE done by my own helped me get my GC approved in 7 days.
Good luck.
