Please help in making the decision

My situation is like this: Green card holder for 3 years. Eligible to apply for citizenship in 2010. Wife is currently eligible to apply to citizenship and in the process of doing so.

However due to personal reasons ( need to take care of family business), We need to return to India in the next 6 months. Wife might get her citizenship before we leave US. We will be living in India for atleast 5 years.

Since I am going to live in India for such long time, I might lose the green card. Assuming my wife gets the citizenship before we leave US, Can I directly apply for citizenship when I decide to come to US. or Should I get the Green card first and then apply for citizenship.

If you could, please let me know the approximate processing time also.

Thanks

You have to get GC first (There are exceptions which
are not worth mentioning because chance for that is
zero for folks like us)

Thanks WBH. Do you know the approximate processing time for such family based GC processing?
Can I apply for the GC even when I am not in US? If I need to live in US while my GC is getting processed, what kind of visa do I need to apply to live in US?

He already has a GC, so he needs to get his citizenship first.

Mr Vertigo
I might lose my GC because I am going to stay in India for 5 years without visiting US. I am not sure how and when USCIS will inform me when my GC will be terminated.

Ah, OK then. Didn't quite follow. I think it would be best for you to surrender it and then re-apply based on your wife's citizenship.

It might take longer than 6 months for her to be approved for citizenship. I hope there enough flexibility in your plans so she can stay in the US until approval and oath (with only short visits to India), because if she spends too much time outside the US during the process they can deny her application for doing so.
