I am presently a resident and when i finish my residency i will only have six months left on my H1B visa

I have a few questions

1. I am a Indian citizen now but can become a British citizen (I was born in Scotland) when i want, is there any advantage to changing citizenship to British. Will that help in my GC process by making it faster or it goes by my country of birth ?

2. I will finish my residency June 2008. When should I apply for the GC that means when should i sign my contract for the job and start the process?

I appreciate help

Thanks

Well, the advantage would be that you could do consular processing in the UK which might be faster than in india. The country quotas go by country of birth, so you already fall into the UK quota rather than india (lucky you, india is backlogged at this time)

ASAP would be the honest answer. There was a recent thread on how and when you can file for GC during residency. It looks like you will need some sort of setup which allows you to get 7th year extensions on your H1b or an early change to EAD. So, given the usual delays and processing issues, you want to have a job at least a year before you graduate.
Consider going into the bun-doks for a couple of years to get your GC. Practices that have hard to fill positions can be more forthcoming when it comes to giving you early contracts or filing paperwork for your GC. (also, for rural positions it is pretty easy to fulfill the advertising requirements. the chances of someone qualified applying can be held relatively low in this setting).

Thanks

thanks hardon

i appreciate your response

Do you know how much time it takes for someone who is born in UK ?

Do you think joining a university based academic program might be better than private practice

Would my H1B will be considered under cap if I join a private practice ?

thanks
