Please help for some friends with J1/J2 visa

A friend ask me for this.... maybe somebody can help me.
They have been in J1 and husband in J2 visa for 2 years. They are getting now and extension for 4 more month under the same visa. The husband got a working permit and he has been working. They will not get the renewal of the visa with enough time to get the new working permit for the husband. What happen if the new working permit don;t arrive before the old one expire?, he can continue working just because he applied for it or he has to stop working until he gets it?.
And what about the driving licence, the told them that no driving licence is given if you don't have a permit in the country for more than a year, they have driving licence now but it expire the same day than the visa expire. They will be able to extent it for only 4 month?.

No work permit, no work. Don't know about driving license specifics - as rules vary as states change.

Do you know if having a J2 visa you can apply for a work permit in a local office?.
Being an extension of the previous visa do you know if the date of the new work permit will be the date of beginning of the extension or will be the date when this will be approve?.
By the way.... the state is NJ in the case that somebody knows something about the driving licence.

march_tracker: I know and I appologize for it. But this is my forum because I am waiting for the approval of my long going I-485. All the people in this forum know so much of the full process that I though they can also know about this issue that some friends ask me.

One can apply at most local centers - however, it also depends upon what type of applications are accepted by that center - you can find such information either on BCIS website or by calling concerned local center and making it sure. Sometimes, even if a local center accepts such applications, their processing time-frame and procedure might vary a bit as compared to the VSC or other local centers although the forms/fees will be the same.

Work permits should be continuous in dates if applied for extension in time.
