Please answer, SSN question !!!!

I received my social security card today in the mail. I am looking forward to get my driver's license now, and I know they need the SSN from me. Now my question is, because on the card it says : ONLY VALID FOR EMPLOYEMENT WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION, does that mean that I can't ask for a driver's license or what ? I am totally confused now and wish someone could answer my question !!

You are entitle to the DMV license

since you got your status with the work authorization for maybe 1 year you can have your driving license for 1 year . It is expired with your work authorization . All you need is to go to the DMV with your EAD and SSN and also a proof of address and then you ready to go .

No, it has nothing to do with your license. The SS is only to authorize you to work ( you have to have a work permit of some sort (EAD, work visa, etc) to support your SS. The SS if for taxing purposes.

DL wont be issued if you dont have SSN.
 
e17345, I don't know if you check out the DMV new laws in different states, but for most states you NEED an SS number to apply for driver's license. Some take a denial form from the SSA but you will need to proof that you are in a legal status here, like your EAD, AP or other stuff.

Although the SSN is for tax pourposes in some cases, there are cases when the SSN says not valid for work and are given for people who can have a SSN but do not have work authorization for bank pourposes or other things, of course in that case you have to supply further documentation.

In Ema case she doesn't have any problem at all. She just have to go with her SS number and EAD and proof of address and she will have her driver license without any inconvenience as Philaug28 said before.

Mr needy, I apply for my SSN on July 12th and receive it yesterday July 19th. It took a week and I'm in the Chicago suburbs area (Joliet).

P.S.: I hope you'll get yours very soon. Call them to see why you did not received yet yours...
