Can I use my passport instead of my birth certificate. Please if some one could advice me what other alternative like notary signed document et al I could use instead of my birth certificate.

I know couple of my friends got their birth certificates issued from the Indian Embassy in US. And they got approved with no problems. But this was done like 2 to 3 years ago!! Hope this helps!!!

BC issued by Indian Embassy works only for people born before 1970.
Even in that case, you may need a non-availability certificate
from your birth place. Remember, INS has become extremely picky
about birth certification documents.
 
Birth Certificate

Talk to somebody in your town/village to get Birth certificate if its not available Municipal Authorities issue Non-availability certificate with that you can get affidavit and submit the both.
