I already have my temporary I-551 paper card. And I'm not really in a rush since this card is just as good as the plastic card for most things I need to do. Just for curiousity's sake how long does it take to get the plastic card? (IIO who issued my temporary I-551 said it will come in within 12 months)
Those of you who have already received your plastic cards please post the time it took for you to receive the plastic card.

Hi Jack, my family and I are in the same situation and haven't received the plastic card yet. Also, would like to know a couple of things:
== Who sends the plastic card? Nebraska or the local INS office?
== Does the online status check system, change the message saying the plastic card has been mailed? I dont think so, but would like to confirm.

I am curious as to what this I-551 temporary card is...

Does it include your picture and all pertinent data such as birthdate, A# etc ?

Does it state that you are a permant resident?

When do you obtain this card in the I-485 process?

temporary card is issued after your passport or I-94 is stamped with adjustment of status approval. Yes, it has a photo of the person and A# etc.
As I mentioned before this card is only issued after your adjustment is approved and passport or I-94 is stamped.

Nebraska I think. My I-485 was processed by NSC.
I havn't checked the online status since my approval.

Yes, includes picture and all pertinent data
Yes, states it is a temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence until you actually get the plastic card.
You obtain the card after your I-485 is approved and they ask you to go to your local office for passport stamping. I went with my RTD, they kept the RTD and gave me the I-551 card.
Other members of my family went with their expired passports and they stamped the Permanent residence in their passports (yes, in their expired passports!!) and didnt get the I-551.

Just checked my case status online and it doesn't say they have mailed my plastic card.
Until we get our plastic cards what will be our green card numbers?

It took me 3 months to receive the plastic card after I got my I-551. However, they did not backdate my green card for a year as they should. So I went to the local office and surrendered my old one so that they can give me a new one that is backdated. I have been waiting another 2 months for that. I guess that even when they do not take so long to do something for you, they have to screw up one way or another.

It is just not preditable. Patience is your only recourse.
