Saw a posting on the indian embassy on the web site. It advices that persons holding Indian passports with 20 year validity are advised to apply for a new 10 year validity passport by following requirements applicable for issue of new passport. The new passport will be issued gratis except for applicable mailing charges.
Is it compulsory. We are awaiting FP notice anytime now so do not want to send our passports.
Can someone please advice us on this ?

It's not compulsory, but better to do it if you already crossed 10 years of passport life (out of 20 years). Most of the country in the world have passport book life for 10 years (including USA).
There were some incidents occured in USA when immigration officer thought that 20 years passport was fake. I think Indian consulates are trying to deal with that issue.

I have had a conversation with a Mr. Vijayant of The Indian consulate at SFO.
He informed me it was an option as One Indian was harresed at the Mexican/american border.
If you want you can always get it changed, but he and I agree advised you wait till you get your GC if you are close to it.
I have Myself travelled on a 20 yr old validity more thana few times and never have I faced a problem.
Ther has been a discussion on this forum about this already. Please check on that.
I diont think there is any kind of problem and you shouldnt worry about this .
