Personal appearance in US Consulate for H1B stamping (SSN not received)

Hi,

I was initially on H4 Visa and later on I have got H1B Visa processed while in USA. With that I have started working and have also applied for SSN 2 months back. Till now I have not received my SSN, and the SSA office says that my visa status is still H4 in their database so they need it to be verified by INS/DHS before they can issue my SSN. SSA have already sent a request to INS/DHS for this but till now they have not received any updates.

Now, I have to go to India for some urgent work and at the same time I also have to appear for a personal appearance in US consulate in India for my H1B stamping. In that case do I need my SSN or I can go ahead and appear for H1B stamping without having my SSN with me. Note: I am already working in US for past three months. Will it be a problem when I go for a personal appearance without SSN?

Please reply to me. I would appreciate any advice from any one.

Thanks in advance.
