I don't travel a lot by I know that a person may bring into or take out of the country, including by mail, as much money (includes U.S. or foreign coins currently in circulation, currency, traveler’s checks in any form, money orders, and negotiable instruments or investment securities in bearer form) as he/she wish. However, if it is more than $10,000, that person will need to report it to CBP by asking a CBP officer for the Currency Reporting Form (FinCen 105). You can also download the form HERE. The penalties for non-compliance can be severe. I believe they can even seize the money over $10,000 if you fail to declare it.
