We have applied for I 751 in May and got the receipt notice and biometric done. My wife has to travel outside US, and the receipt notice does say that she could travel out of US, but someone told us to get 551 stamp from local immigration office. Is it easier to get the stamp from INS after infopass appointment? what supporting documents that we need for this? I heard with expired green card and this NOA, sometimes airlines give hard time when you are coming back to US.

Thanks

GC Approved July 2010
I 751 filed May 2012
NOA June 2012
FIngerprinting July 2012

When you filed for I751, you should have got a reciept notice. Which should say that your GC is extended for 1 year,
Take that letter along with the FP appointment letter , expired GC, you passport, and make an appointment at infopass. they will put a stamp 551 in the passport. That is your green card which will have a valdation date for 1 yr.
No one will give you any hard time. Only when you come back to USA at the port of entery the IO will ask you - where is your GC, you can teel him the situation, some times they send you down stairs at the airport and just double ckeck if you are telling the truth. Nothing to worry, its a normal process/.
