PCC from New York by post - any issues?

Hi,

I plan to apply for PCC from Indian consulate from New York by post. As I understand, I need to send $20 as processing fees along with original passport and $15 for express shipping of the documents back (Passport).

I am trying to call/ email the consulate and get clarification and everybody out there seems useless - typical goverment guys! Living in US, they still haven't heard of a concept called "Customer Service".

PCC takes about 45 days. My concern is, do they send back the passport immediately after accepting the application or do they send the passport back only after PCC is approved (after 45days or so)?

What's your experience? After talking to guys out there... I am nervous about sending my passport by post? Has anybody had problems about misplaced passport from NY/any consulate?

Are there any other steps/costs involved in PCC? Am I missing anything?

Your comments are greatly appreciated.

Octa

[ It is your choice to either send the original passport along with the application,

(OR)

Send a photocopy first and then when they are ready to issue
the PCC,

a1) Send the original PP in mail.

(or)

a2) Depending on how far you are from New York, take it
to the Consulate yourself ]

[ Instead of calling them useless, can we say, may be they are
busy ]

[ If you send you PP with the application then you will get it back
only after PCC is issued and the notation is made in the PP]

[ Your nervousness is justified, and I am sure there would be
cases of mis-placed, lost passports.]

Are there any other steps/costs involved in PCC? Am I missing anything?

[ Other than paying the prescribed fee, there are no other costs ]

Your comments are greatly appreciated.

[ While you are doing this, take a look at the validity of your
PP also, considering the fact that your PP shoud be valid for
atleast 8 months beyond your expected IV interview date. ]

PCC from NY

Hi,

I recently got my PCC from NY.

* I had sent mine and my wife's passport pages copy + covering letter + M.O in Nov '02.

* Immediately followed up with a phone call (212-774-0667 : Ph # of PCC services desk) : Got a Reference Number
I was told that after 45 days if they dont hear from our "irRESPONSIBLE INIDAN CPOUNTERPARTS.." the local officer can issue PCC -

* I did not get any intimation from NY - I too did not want to ruch it because I did not know when the interview will be... Just called them twice to keep the hearbeat alive (every month..)

* 2 weeks ago, I called them again and gave the ref # - I told the person that I am sending Original Passports with $15 MO for Express mail back + covering letter "Mention Ref # and Reason for PCC - Immigation to USA" - I got both of our PCC in the same package with passports stampled.

- You need not feel pissed with them - But I do understand thet they are not "great" in dealing with people over phone professionally.

Good luck.
-Sriram.

PCC

Since my renewed passport was issued from NYC, it took only 2 weeks to get a PCC from NY. I had sent the original passport and got it via express mail without problems.
Dittos to other ideas.
