PCC- from Mumbai Sucks-Please help

I was reading through the MUMBAI US embassy WEBSITE regarding Police clearance certificate (PCC), and they state it as below:

Do I need to get a police certificate for the interview?
All Indian IV applicants aged 16 and over, residing in India, should obtain police certificates from the Local Passport Office. Applicants whose Indian passport was issued within the past six months may present just the Passport Office Police Certificate, and need not obtain additional police clearances.

Applicants over age 16, whose passports were issued more that six months previous to visa application, must also obtain a police clearance from the District Police Office serving the applicant's place of residence.

The second paragraph clearly states that even if I am staying in US for last 4 years and has gone only to India once for 20 day's I would still need a PCC from District police in Thane(Suburb of Mumbai), India.

I requested my parents to obtain it and I was ordered to be in Person along with my original passports(too risky isn't it) for the PCC and that too they will issue only after 30 days. It does not sound feasible unless, I leave my job over here.

When we requested them that I could not be in person the second option they said was to come through proper channel and that is through the Consulate general in US. I have already obtained from them and I explained the situation to the consultae. They said they are unable to co-ordinate and get the PCC from local police station in India. They say they have already issued one from them & it should be sufficient.


After spending two weeks going back and forth and spending near to $50 on phone calls I only know that I am moving in circles. It was a pleasent experience to obtain the PCC from the consulate here. PCC from India sucks. HOW IN THE WORLD CAN I OBTAIN PCC FROM INDIA. Any ideas, how some of you have handled this kind of situation

PCC only from Indian Consulate in US if ....

If you been in USA for most of the time and visited India for less than 6 months, then you only need PCC from Indian Consulate in USA. If you recently been in India for more than 6 months then you will need a PCC from local police station.

Most of the info about PCC requirement on the US consulates website in India is for family based immigration.

PCC from India is only for persons residing in India. Since you are residing in US for last 4 years, PCC from consulate in US is sufficient.
 
Thanks guys for giving me the Letter format. I will also send the similar letter and obtain the response from them.

If someone asks additional local PCC during interveiw I can atleast show them the e-mail response from them. Its better to be safe than sorry.

Comments on PCC!!!!

Me and my wife have received PCC from Indian Consulate, Chicago on September 2002.

After that I have received new passport from Indian Consulate, Chicago due to expire of 10 years.

Question/Help :
PCC is on my old passport and I have new passport is there any problem or delay due to this? ( I will bring two passport with me at the time of interview )

-->> My wife is in India since November 15, 2002. She also has new passport from Indian Government (Passport Office). Same position new passport and old passport contains PCC. Also I am expecting interview in April. I.e. she is india for 5 and 1/2 months before interview.

Quest : do she needs to take pcc from local police station ?
do she needs to take pcc from Passport office which will take 2 months and she has to submit her passport ??
OR
THERE IS NO NEED FOR PCC????

No PCC is required if the new passport was issued in last 6 months. This is applicable for individuals in US and India. The reason being that Passport office does a police check before issuing a new passport.

Guys,

I just responded to the consulate and they said the same thing that we would not need any PCC from India since we are staying in US. With that Letter. That means we can only carry the PCC from US.

PCC from Mumbai

Hi Dax,

On the PCC, i dont think you will need local PCC from Mumbai. But i am sure on your wife's behalf as she is residing in India for last 5 months and by the time of interview it will be 6 months.
Just a thought on my part. My wife's is in India too and she got the PCC from Mumbai Passport Office as she just got her new passport. It took her two weeks to get it, passport comes in mail once you submit it in Passport Office.

Finally by God's grace got the GC. But as a precautionary measure even after obtaining PCC from Indian consulate in US, when I went to India, went to the local Police station and got the PCC from India as well. Its hell of a job in India to obtain any document. Need lot of determination. Finally got it after 10 days of continously being in various offices.

And thank god, When they asked for Indian PCC I had it and I just presented it without arguing whether it is needed or not. The person at the US consulate was new. He said he wanted two PCC's and I just gave it to him since I had it.

Moral: It does not hurt to be over prepared sometime.

getting PCC from Pune, India?

hi,

I am in US for a long time and hence I won't be needing the PCC from India, however, my wife has been studying so far in India and hence she will need to obtain PCC from local district office. What does local district office mean? She stays in Pune. Does it mean the police headquarters in Pune?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You are right, Every Police headquarters have a special crime branch- foreign affairs office. Go over there and ask for the PCC. They will tell you to go to the local area police station and ask you to get further details or they will obtain it directly from your area police station. Once they receive that info, they will issue you a PCC (After making few rounds). Also you need your wife to go the passport office and take a PCC from the Passport office where the passport was issued. They need two forms of PCC from India resident.

As for you, when your wife is obtaining the PCC from Police headquarters you can obtain for yourself as well, because you never know, if the consular officer is new and if they ask, its better to have(though it is not necessary).
