1. Is it true that Chennai is telling to get PCC for every one after jan
   interview.
2. Do we need to get PCC from consulates here in US OR do we need to get
PCC from Indian local police station ALSO.

Some one please clarify...

Hi san77
Looks like it is true. If you check the Immigration FAQ section on the Chennai consulate website, they say that a statement from the local Consulate is needed stating that we have no criminal record. This is for indians applying for Immigrant visa who are residing outside india. So i think they are now making it part of the procedure. But so far, to a lot of email inquiries , chennai consulate has been saying that PCC was not required. So its better to apply for one at your local Consulate.

Thanks
Sujatha

My interpretation

PCC from consulte is sufficient, if you are staying here in US, no need to get local PCC.

Yes that is correct. For people residing outside india and applying for IV, Just need a PCC from your local Indian consulate. No need for getting PCC from india.

Thanks

Now it\'s official. Effcetive date for PCC is Feb.1st.

Applicants abroad should get a PCC from the nearest Indian Consulate. No need of Local PCC in India.

How do you know the efective date is Feb 1st?

Hi Superman,

I am going for CP @ Chennai on Jan 24. How do you know Chennai consulate is enforcing PCC from Feb 1st? Any official confirmation? Your reply will definitely help..

Thanks,
Subra

Superman, a question please?

Now that it is offical, MY PROBELM INTENSIFIED......
Dear friend, As I was telling you previously, I already have a PCC from Chicago consulate, but wife is in India now, I cannot apply for a PCC from the local consulate.

Here are the details:
1. ON P3 DS-230 form, I have given the USA address as her present address. Now is it a must that I should get the PCC for her from the Consulate only OR Can I get a PCC for her from Hyderabad\'s RPO office
2. Should I get a PCC from local district SP office too.(Well, as I understand from the message on immigration-law.com, it looks like I need not get a PCC from local district office, but how do we confirm that that is TRUE.)

Please respond your thoughts and opinions on this...Also, if you could think of some authentic agency(attorney/consulate/anyone..)where we could confirm about my wife\'s case, that would be great..

If you could give me your telephone no, I would like to give you a call now...if it\'s not a problem for you
Thanks

For how long your wife is in India ?.
Is she ever in US?. Refresh my memory. MY phone no. Is (616)656-1378. Feel free to contact me. I will try to help you to the best of my knowledge.

Sujatha ji, I hope you are right but...

Sujata ji,
I hope u are right since that would reduce lot of hardship for us..
However, if you carefully obsreve the message posted by the consulate, one would be (atlease I am) inclined to think that there is no specific mention about the inidan citizens living abroad.
I have an opinion that we are misled by the wording "outside India" in the message , " Indian passport holders applying for visas outside India should obtain a statement from their local embassy or consulate confirming they have no criminal record.
". I don\'t think it means that "from outside India".

Well, I would hope and pray that the PCC from consulate will suffice, since I already have a PCC from the consulate, but I don\'t have the PCC for my wife and she is in India now......

I have sent an e-mail to the consulate for the clarification on this, hope I get a reply by wednesday morning.

Hi I heard that NY consulate takes up to 45 days to issue pcc. How can we get this done before february if i apply this week? any thoughts anybody else in the same situation still to apply for pcc.

Some options

Folks,

Just thought I\'d share some things I was able to figure out and hopefully it will help Feb CPers (we Jan guys had a narrow escape).
1) If you had your passport reissued in US, it usually takes the consulates only a day + mail time(all except Chicago is what I hear). You can either go in person or send them the form, etc by mail. Easy, simple and doable for Feb. Infact, if your passport is anywhere close to expiring it may be a good idea to get it reissued as well. I got mine done in a week flat.
2) If your passport is from India and u reside in US, it takes anywhere from 30 to 90 days, if you apply to the consulate here. It depends on how quickly they get a response back from the RPO in India. I heard you can get this speeded up asomewhat by paying an extra 22 $s and getting the consulate and RPO to telex info to each other (you will have to speak to the comcerned consulate about this). The only other way to speed this up would be if you know/approach somebody at the concerned RPO to send a response back quickly. An alternative approach, but I\'m not sure about its validity given u\'re residing here, but you guys can follow up on this. Apply to the RPO in India in person (go a lil early to India for the interview). You can get PCC there on the same day (go it the morning, get it in the evening). But again, I\'m not sure if RPO will issue PCC to people who are not resident in India or whether the consulate will accpet this, so this is definitely not the recommended approach.
3) PCC from local police is not needed for folks in US. For folks in India, it is needed only if your passport has been issued more than 6 months prior to date of interview. For those whom this applies to, there is still some confusion with getting this. Some stations are refusing to give this as their regulation doesn;t permit it, but some are. This issue is getting some publicity in the press in India, so hopefully things will be cleared up soon. Your best bet is to approach the District Police office and take some evidence of what the consulate is requesting (like your appointment letter, website print out, etc).

All the best to you all
