PCC de-mystified

Friends,
i am just returning from the Hyd Passport Office after submitting my application for a PCC. I hold a passport from Mumbai. What I gathered is this :
     a. You need to submit the original Passport with the application. Hence people not present here locally cannot apply unless you courier your passport to your relatives (dunno how advisable that is).
     b. For Hyd Passport holders with a local address, it takes a day.
     c. For Hyd passport holders with address elsewhere in the state, takes a week.
     d. For me, it might take even up to 30 days.
     e. The cost is Rs.100/-
     f. I was able to pay Rs.200/- extra to enable an \'Inquiry by Fax\'. This means, instead of sending a letter to the passport issuing authority in Mumbai, they will fax them and receive the reply by fax. This might (might) cut down the time by almost half, so I did not mind the money.
     g. I needed to submit a proof that I am residing here for the past two years. I am, so no problem giving my telephone bill.
     h. I needed to give the names and address of two neighbours to vouch for me here in hyderabad. The local beat-constable will be asked to personally come and verify my residence and character integrity. I suppose i might need to enhance my integrity in his eyes with some judicious use of a couple of C notes. I only hope he comes over soon.
     i. the total time taken for all this is less than 1 hour, so that is not a problem.
     j. I was told that for people not in India, the PCC HAS to be from the nearest consulate.

I also met somebody trying to get these details for his brother in Washington DC. I explained all this to him, but if it is anybody reading this, you can get in touch with me for further clarifications.

Now i only hope i can get a Chennai interview in Feb. My Pkt 3 reached them on Dec 14, but yesterday they sent me an email to \'check back with them in Feb\'! Does that mean Feb is shot for me? Hope not...

some additional info for all - I got RPO PCC today

I am also processing my CP from India (Hyderabad). Expect Feb Chennai.

I got my PCC from Hyderabad RPO Today. We lived in US for the past 4 years. In Sept 2001, I moved back to Hyd to work with our Indian operations. In the application form I gave the present address as Hyderabad. Since I had not lived in Hyderabad for 2 recent years, I also gave my US address in the form.

There was no police enquiry. I applied personally on 4th and I picked it up today. RPO PCC has 2 things.

1. An endorsement on the passport specifically mentioning that the PCC is for travel/visa to USA.
2. A separate police clearance certificate in paper (they gave me 2 originals??) mentioning the passport details and that this was being given for travel/visa to USA.

Any questions, please send me private..

Now I need to get the Local Police PCC. Any idea how to get? What format?

Email from Madras about PCC.

Now, I am even more confused. I thought that a PCC from the local Indian Embassy will do for folks who live in the US, but Madras is saying something else. Any thoughts? Has anyone called Madras to confirm if we need a local PCC from the police station as well?

Dear Sir/Madam,

-- Applicants over age 16 whose passports were issued more than six months
previous to visa application must also obtain a police clearance from the
district police office serving the applicant\'s place of residence.

I am not clear on whether the above is applicable for cases where the
applicant i.e. myself, has resided in the United States for the last 6
years, or is this for people residing in India. Can you let me know?

Thanks,
Pramod

Subject: Police Certificate Requirement for IV petitions.

Dear Sir/Madam,
My case number is MDR2001764019. I have called the Chennai consulate and
confirmed that you have received my Packet-3 documents. My appointment has
*not* been scheduled for January 2002, and I am assuming that it will be
scheduled in the Feb/March timeframe.

The Police Certificate requirements seem to have changed since I sent out my
Packet-3 documents to Chennai. The instructions on the website are ambiguous
and do not clearly state what the requirements are for a case like mine: I
am on a H1-B visa and currently living in the United States.

I currently live and work in California and am on a H1-B visa. I have
applied for Consular Processing in Chennai and have sent my documents to
Chennai in November, through my attorney. My passport was issued in 1992 in
Hyderabad, India. I have been in the United States for the last 6 years on
F1(1995-1997) and H1(1997-present) visas.

Questions:
- Do I need a police certificate?
- Do I need one from the passport office and one from the local police?
- Do I need a certificate from the Indian Consulate in the United States?
- If I am unable to get the police certificate prior to the interview
because of delays in the process, what are my options? (The police office in
India will not issue a certificate unless I am physically there and the
process takes a couple of months.)

Different opinions??

Called chennai consulate 2 weeks ago to confirm if i would need PCC. Have not resided in any other country other than US for the last 5 years now. The lady at the consulate said I would not neet PCC, if had stayed only in USA and India. Someone please clarify if I do or do not.

Thank you much,
Ravi
