How long does it take to get US Passport if you applied at post office (in the regular way - no "expedited delivery")

Thanks in advance

Taking longer

Expedited service is now taking close to the full two weeks that they quote as their service standard. I sent my application on 07/18, and have been calling to check on status each of the last couple of days. I was told it will be done today or tomorrow, so I should receive it on 07/29. I also asked about regular processing and that is also approaching the 6 week service standard (2-4 weeks was what others had been reporting here as recently as a few months ago for "regular," 1 week for "expedited").

There's apparently a large backlog building as the new passport requirements approach.

I heard that there is a large backlog approaching although I do not know which passport requrements are you talking about? The ones that stipulate that Americans will have to use passports to cross into Canada or Careebeans?

I am also hearing that early next year a totally new design of US passport has to be unveiled, with biometric identification. So, unless in urgent need, it is probably wise to wait for the new version that is likely to give less problems as far as travel is concerned.

Yes, I am talking about the requirements that U.S. citizens will have to have a passport to RE-ENTER the U.S. when RETURNING FROM countries where this was not required before. Some people are already acting on the inevitable. There's also rumors that the fees are going to go up considerably for the new passport design so that is probably driving the volume up now too as people try to avoid this.

I need my passport for travel in a week and a half and again in Sept., so can't wait around while they figure out the next design. I just got tracking confirmation that it is on its way to me, so I should get mine tomorrow (9 business days).

On the contrary, if they indeed put an RFID chip in there as was proposed, anybody with a new passport is more likely to experience identity theft. Anybody with an RFID reader could read the important data...

Well, I heard the concerns you voice. They are apparently testing a passport now that is much safer, plus encrypted. Unless you put the passport really infront of the reader you want be able to read it. In anyway, I do not think they will back off from the new design. And I do not think the identity theft will be bigger in the future. It is like with credit cards (OK, not the same) at first people thought that online use will lead to massive increase of credit card thefts, but today as it turns out the chances are bigger that your credit card will be stolen in a regular way, in the mail or shops like it always use to be stolen. Not via reading (even the encrypted info) the info while in travel off the internet.
