Folks,

My passport was issued by Indian Consulate, NY and has a validity of 20 years. I just talked to the Indian consulate and they say that I should convert it to a new passport with 10 yr validity to avoid any problems with US immigration people.

Do any of you have a passport with 20 yr validity? If so, are you changing it to a 10 yr validity passport? More importantly, is there anyone out there who was in a similar situation (with a 20 yr passport) but had NO problems with US or Indian immigration??

Please reply.
Thanks
S

No Problem

Just got my MRV immigrant visa today, stamped on a 20 yr PP issued by ind. embassy at NY.
Hence chill everyone, not to worry for now.

GC,

the consulate is not a problem. They would know about the Indian passports. The issue is at the POE (most likely major International airports - Chicago, NYC, LAX ... also should not have a problem) where the immi. officer might judge that the p/p is fraud. So it would be better to carry the printout from the SFO consulate, just in case.

But

Yes Alren,
That's a good idea, but I just entered Phila 3 weeks ago and it wasn't an issue, also my PP has a lot of USA immigration entry stamps. This may be an issue for the people entering USA for the first time.
So strange that the rules keep on changing and one has to be at par with the latest, I'm sure that once I enter USA again and settle down for few months, I'll go in for the 10 yr PP, just to get a new PP - hopefully free of cost.

GCM.

when I spoke to the official at SFO consulate he told me , they had offered this "option" as people had compalined that they were being harrassed at the airports.
However the 20 yr plassport is valid and he suggested that I complete my GC process and then apply for a new 10 yr passport free of cost :) ofcourse if I wanted to

As I said big airports is not a problem. It was just that a** at US-Mex border posting who made the life miserable for some fella.

Guys,

To add my 2 cents - the case at Mexico boarder is a unique issue. In the case of GC, we send the PP for PCC and have the PCC stamped on the PP. And this is got by the local consulate basically from the PP office. So that goes to prove that the PP is valid and issued by the PP authority and not a fake. May be I am wrong
