passport validity for stamping

I wanted to know whether it is necessary for the passport to be valid at least for 1 year for GC stamping? My passport is only valid for 5 months.
Should I renew the passport before getting stamped or should I wait to get stamping done first?

ins officer will ask you if you have a valid passport.. if you don't they will probably give you a temporary card. you should bring three photos to give to them. when i went for my stamping in ny last friday i heard the security guard announcing on the megaphone that if you don't have a valid passport they will give you temporary card if you have 3 photos. to be sure ask your attorney.
 
I went for my stamping in Aug 2002. My passport was valid till Dec 2002. I was told (by the person who collected the docs and gave me the token) that the stamp on my passport will have validity upto Dec 2002. If the card didn't arrive, I would have to go for a stamping again. But later, when the officer called me for the stamping, he stamped the passport with one year validity. The card then arrived in Sept 2002 and I renewed my passport in Nov 2002.
 
why dont you get the passport renewed ? It only takes 3 days by mail from NY Indian Consulate ....

u can also visit the indian consulate in NYC and get it done on the same day. Be sure to arrive early by 11 AM and you'll get it back around 5:00 PM same day.
U can also do it by mail.
