Hi,

Iam sponsoring B2 visa for my parents - my problem is that my mother's surname is not correct on the passport.

father's first name is KRISHNA MENON , my mother's surname is spelled as KRISHAN MENON. It is just a matter of N and A getting interchanged. Already got receipt from HDFC using the passport. Have not got appointment yet.Is this a problem?

Do I need to correct the passport? Problem is they might issue a new passport # which wont match the reciept. What name should I fill in while filling the DS-156 for the appointment? Shall I use the name currently on the passport or should I enter the name that is correct?

If I decide to keep the current passport and file DS-156 using the incorrect surname ( surname is only mentioned in the passport ) would there be a problem either at the consulate or port of entry for any reason? Should I correct the passport?

Please advise!! Any suggestion highly appreciated.

Go to the passport office and findout whether they can do an 'Observation' done on her passport. If yes, its a one day process with a minimal fee. Observation is nothing but stamping on epage of the passport with correct name. I am not sure whether they will do this in this case because of name correction. But try it out.

If the answer from passport office is No, then use whatever name as it is in the passport. That should be fine.

Thanks, dahlia.

Checked with the visa application center and they advised to correct the passport. Got the passport corrected in just one day and got the appointment with the correct name.
