Passport submission for L1 extension. Precautions ??

I need to submit my passport to get my L1 stamped.
How safe is it in the US to give away your passport for 6-8 weeks ? Are the passport copies sufficient to prove your identity or do we need something more?
I have a US state ID but do not have a Driving license.
