If any of you know the process for getting a new passport after its lost ....

I am in US on H1..

Any help will be highly appeciated.

Passport Loss

Still assuming you are from Mumbai:

Report the issue to cops and then get the copy of it.
It will come by mail. This copy is equivalent to FIR in India.

U might have to report it mutiple locations

This Cops report which will be required to be given to Indian consulate for a new/duplicate passport.

Sorry about the pp. too much trouble..
 
You *must* report it to the indian consulate as the very first step and if they advise to you to report to the cops, then do so. please bear in mind that someone can force your identity and use the passport and get you in a load of crap. if you have any visa stamped on the passport, perhaps it's better to report to INS too. call the 800 number for INS and ask to speak to an immigration officer and ask him/her what exactly to do in the situation.

Don't call INS

Do not do the mistake of calling INS for your passport issues. YOU need to register a complaint with the police and use a copy of that to get new passport from Indian Embassy. Do it quick.
