Passport Stamping Question

Is Stamping of Passport after I-485 approval mandatory? Can\'t I just wait for the Plastic Card if I have no intention of traveling before I get the Plastic Card?
 
Additional question

Someone who reply to above message should also know whether expired passport will be allowed to be stamped.
In my case passport expired back in 1996 and it looks like I won\'t be able to get a new one from my country embassy.
I\'m also not going anywhere in foreseeble future.
Appreciate any feedback!
 
Must get passport stamped

You must get your passport stamped to initiate the process of getting plastic card. You have to sign a form and give finger prints at the time of stamping.
