Passport Stamping and Traval Via UK

Does one need actual green card (plastic) in order to travel via UK without Transit Visa or just stamping is enough to travel thru UK.

Anyone has any idea please share with me...

Or Should I ask the airline for a definitive answer.

I checked with UK Embassy a month ago and according to them you need actual/plastic card to avoid Transit visa. Stamping is not enough. Paris and Frankfurt are also similar with respect to Transit Visa requirements.

Only Amsterdam does not require Transit visa as long as you do not leave the airport (during transit)

Has anyone applied for UK transit visa online before?. It says we have to send all "ORIGINAL" doucments including passport by mail. Does anyone know how many days it will take to get a visa?. Any other additional info will be helpful.
