Namaste
As I posted earlier, my I485 was approved on Nov 20, 2002.
I received the approval notice on Nov 23rd. My lawyer didn't
receive his copy. So I took just my copy to the INS office in
Chicago.
I went early in the morning on Monday 12/16/2002 at 6AM.
The INS office opens at 7AM. There were almost 70/80 people
ahead of us. When office opened at 7AM, they let us come inside.
We had the security check at the lobby. Then we(everybody) were
asked to go upstairs at second floor. Ofcourse once again, we were standing in a line. According to your case type, each one
was getting some number for eg. A29, B01 etc...
Once we got the number, we were sitting in the waiting room looking at the display to change and show up our assigned number. We got into waiting room by 7:30AM. Our number was called(on the display) at 8:15AM. The officer at the window took my I485 approval notice. After looking at the notice, he smiled and said this is very easy and he can get us out from the room in 5 minutes. He asked for 2 photos(same as EAD style), I94 card (which is attached to the passport), EAD card, Advanced Parole documents. He himself was filling up all the information like my name, address, Alien number. I was keeping an eye from the window outside to catch any errors
After completing the form he asked me to come to the window 9 (I guess). He himself came to that window and asked me come inside. He allowed my wife also to come inside (my wife's case is not approved yet.)
He took the fingerprint of my index finger. Then asked me to sign in the rectangle box. Then he took my passport and placed the stamp. And we were done. He did say that it could take anywhere from three months to two years to get the plastic card. So if I don't receive the plastic card within a year, I have to come back again and get the renewal stamp. We were out by 8:30AM.
The entire process of passport stamping was very smooth.
