My PP expires (final 10 year expiry...will need new one after that) in Dec 2005. I just got 485 RFE and hope to get approval soon. Questions are:
1) Should I get the stamp on current passport or should I get a new PP.
2)I do plan to visit India hopefully soon. Does a visit overseas , after you get the PP stamped require the PP to be valid for atleast 6 months (as in Non -immigr overseas visits) or no?
3)Also, at the time of stamping do they need PP valid for atleast 6 months?
4) How does one go about getting a new PP from within US and how long does it take (that is for desi/Indian PP)
:p :p :p

Get a new PP.

Apply at the consulate closest to you. Generally they take about 2 weeks for the PP to be sent. Yes you need a passport with a validity of atleast 6 months for any kind of immigration stamp. Do it fast so you have it before your 485 gets approved.

can renew even by mail

Hello rdip,

Late last year, I renewed my Indian passport via US mail. It is relatively easy and quick, in about 2 weeks they mailed both old and new passports to me.

I enclosed th following are enclosed:

Cover letter with request and attachments list
Completed and Signed Form #1 downloaded from their website
Original Passport
Cashier’s Check for $40, towards application fees
Color copies of first two and last two pages of original passport
Proof of current stay in the US: My green card was final stage, so we have enclosed notarized copies of I-485 receipt notice, EAD card and Advance Parole (travel document)
Three additional photographs (other than the one pasted on the application form)
Another cashier’s check for $5 towards mailing charges

Make sure the above requirements did not change recently. Just FYI, I renewed mine from Indian consulate in Chicago.

Hope that helps.
