Can somebody help me understand these scenarios?

(a) Can a person get his/her green (plastic) card in mail, if (s)he does not go for the passport stamping after the approval of I-485?

(b) What is legitimate time period INS gives, to get the passport stamped after I-485 is approved; assuming that the time period is not mentioned on the approval notice.

(c) At what point the clock of lawful permanent residency starts; is it at time the approval of I-485 or at the time of passport stamping?

Stamping is a must.

PP stamping process triggers the manufacture of the plastic card.

A friend of mine did not take his wife for PP stamping since she was in India at that time. He got the plastic card but wife never received it. Upon enquiring after 4 months of him receiving the plastic card, he found out that PP stamping is a must.
