Passport staming with 3 months outside note at port of entry

Hi guys,
I am GC holder since 2002.

I came back to US after 3 months visit to India.
While coming back in US at port of entry the Immigration officer asked me why I was out for 3 months and he stamped my passport and wrote 3 months out note.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? I have already applied for re-entry permit but have not shown the receipt because I came back in just three months.

Any one with similar experience. Please reply.....

I will be going back next month and want to know if there will be any problem while coming back again in US.

Thanks

Danny

Danny229,

Looks like there are very few people who were out for three months who read this forum. The best thing for you to know ( and others on the forum) is to post your experience when you come back again. Your experience will be valuable.

JoeF,

Could you clarify why the stay has to be temporary with ReEntry Permit even though the law says that ReEntry Permit is needed if stay is longer than year?

The law sees the intent to reside in US and ReEntry Permit is one way to show that if you are staying abroad for longer than a year.

So do you mean that you file for ReEntry Permit and then return immediately where law says that ReEntry permit is not needed if stay is longer than a year.

The way to interpret your statement is like this, file ReEntry Permit even though your stay is temporary ( less than a year).

Why do we need ReEntry Permit if stay itself is temporary?

Your green card automatically expires 1 year after you leave US. In order to be admitted back into US, one needs either a re-entry permit or a returning residents immigrant visa (issued by a US consulate).
