I have GC.

Just wanted to know if I am not going out of country.

Do I need passport ? my passport is going to expire soon.

if it is not required I am thinking why should I renew it ?

You do need your passport until you become a citizen. Get it renewed.

Technically, if you don't travel outside USA, you don't need your passport. Your GC is good enough to show your status in USA. However, it's difficult to renew passport from consulate for some countries after it expired for certain period. So, if you need for some emergency or other requirement, you may get stuck.

My passport expired in 1998, and I didn't bother getting it renewed. I filed for citizenship this year. The officer looked at my expired passport, and confirmed the dates I had written on the N-400. (I hadn't travelled outside the country since 1988.) I became an American citizen last month!

Pralay is correct in advising you to renew your passport if you're planning on travelling, or in case of emergency. But as far as the U.S government is concerned, there is no requirement to have an unexpired passport. (But it's important to keep the old one as proof of travel dates if you're going to eventually file for naturalization.)
