Passport renewal

second stage

Registered Users (C)
Folks,

My passport was issued in 95 and expires on May 21st, 2005.
Am a bit confused with what the SFO Consulate website says regarding
new passports and extension of current validity of the passport.

Do I apply for a new passport? or re-new my current passport?

Thanks,
Second

Alright. I read on one of the postings that "passport renewal is considered same as new passsport".

There is a section in the passport that states that validity of the passport can be
extended further until blah...date.

Should I assume that (Indian) passports are valid until 10 yrs and after that you need
to apply for a new passport?( as opposed to extending your current passport for another
10 yrs)

Thanks,
Praveen

What do technical details of renewal of Indian passport at SFO consulate have to do with this forum?

Having a GC enables you to skip passport renewal altogether by obtaining Reentry Permit. The avenue not available to people with nonimmigrant visas/status.

Can u shade some more light on this? Do u mean that GC holders don't need to have valid passports for their home country??

You still need a passport from the country of which you are a citizen. The reentry permit only allows you to reenter the US ( with your passport) if you are a permanent esidnt and need to stay outsie the US for an extended peirod of time.
What was asked of you is why you chose to post your question on this forum, this is meant for Discussing issues pertaining to permanent resident status in the US. Moreover you did not mention which country's passport you were talking about.

Aibolit , this forum may not necessarily be meant for Passport renewal issues, but my Q was no concerned with re-entry permit either. Thanks for your responses.

Schandrag, if you read my posting carefully, you'll know that I did mention
the country where the passport was issued.

In the past 2 yrs, I have observed that this board is getting hostile and not friendly anymore.
People forget that its still a pubicly moderated forum and not their own.

I agree with you. but Mr Aibolit has some different opinion, so I just want to clarify.

Anyway passport renewal should not be posted on this public forum.
