Passport Question

Hello Everyone,

I just received the notice for a Jan 23 interview. :)

I am going to need to change my passport soon (it is very old) but I am concerned about the stamping after the interview. Obviously, if I get a new passport, it will not have the stamp on it.

Is it possible to get a new passport stamped after the interview, if I get approved? Or do I have to have a stamp? Can I just reenter with a passport that is not stamped, as long as I have the green card with me?

Thank you,

Ural

Hi Ural, I'm actually not to answer your question, :) but I'm just curious about your timeline... When did you file your I-130 & 485?

Thanks.

You can renew your passport now.
The stamp will go on it. BTW, I don't think, they are stamping passports anymore with the temporary I-551. Just directly sending out the GC.
I think, you just get the GC in mail and you should be fine to work or travel with it. You only need your GC for permanent residence proof.
You can take the new passport to the interview if you like, but make sure you take your old cancelled one too (specially if it has any type of US visa stamped on it). I did both, and the officer looked at both of my passports, then just placed I-551 stamp on the new one.(This was over 2 years ago now!)

Ural,

Unless you have an urgent need to travel and the officer is a nice person, your passport will be stamped. However, if you just want to have your passport stamped, in case you want to travel.... your request will be denied. USCIS no longer stamp passport, because they claim their new found efficiency ensures that after you are approved, GC will be mailed to you in 10 days.

So, if I were you, will apply for a renewal of my passport, once issued take the old and new to the interview, so that you avoid troubles.... However, don't have your hopes up with regard to a stamped passport, it is now rarity to have it stamped.... ;)

My passport was stamped at the interview last October 24.
And GC did come in the mail 10 days after.
They can still stamp (there's no official policy). It's just discretionary.

Of course....

S,

Of course, of all the people, yours was stamped.... I wonder if you do know the internal deliberations within USCIS... Since I don't have inside connections that you do, I will give you thumbs up on access to the standard of bona fide marriages, internal memos and what else, policy deliberations

Your deep throat is working hard to get you all inside info.... keep us updated.

I have no inside connections.
But I personally know 3 people and all of them had their passport stamped this year.
Plus many people on this board got their passport stamped. It is not that uncommon.
Definitely it's not true that USCIS doesn't stamp passport anymore.

Ok...

I also just mentioned to you that my friend's wife had her passport stamped so that she can go overseas. I never said to you or suggested there is a memo which instruct officers to not stamp passport. It depends on DO and the officer, because these days they strive to send plastic cards within 10 days. :(

I have also read many people's post in this board who were denied a stamp in their passport by officers, on the premise that their card will be in the mail in 10 days. :p

You know what... my experiences are different from you, and will always be so. As such, I am not going to argue or engage in epistemological discussion with you on practices of an agency which has no consistency on anything..:D

How abou that...
