I have a question about the passport for the interview. My passport has expired a long time ago (1996). Do I need a valid passport for the interview? I have not left the country since I arrived here in 1996. I had no need for a new one.

nope. you do not need to have a valid passport for the interview. however, you need to bring the passport which you used to enter to US.
