Hello Bobsmyth,

I recently had my interview and have a son for whom we have not yet applied for citizenship. Me & my wife are waiting for the oath date. The immigration officer told us that you can get a passport for our 10 year old son, and he can travel out of the US but suggested that some agencies ask for certificate of citizenship and so we should fill the N-600 form. What do we need to do and in what order.

Apply in whichever order is more convenient for you, or both at the same time. But the passport will arrive much faster (less than 1 month, instead of 2-6 months for N-600).

Thanks for your response. Can I apply for my son's passport as will in the fast mode (not sure what it is called) so he can get it in 1 to 3 days. Also what are the documents that a child's passport need:
- Parents citizenship certificate
...is there any other document required like childs green card or birth certificate from India.

For his US passport or N-600, you'll need:

- Your naturalization certificate or US passport (note that whichever one you provide, they'll keep it until they issue the passport, then mail it back to you later)
- Child's green card
- Evidence of legal custody of your son (if still married and not separated, legal custody is presumed)
- Evidence that your son is living with you (or was living with you on or after the day you naturalized, if he's no longer living with you), such as school records with his name and address being the same as your address
- Birth certificate (to establish the parental relationship)

If you get the N-600 first, you don't need to provide all the above for his passport, you can just provide his citizenship certificate. But vice versa is not true -- if you get the passport first, you still need to show all the above for the N-600.

For N-600 you only send copies with the application (but bring the originals when going to pick up the certificate); for the passport they'll take your passport or natz. certificate and mail it back to you another day.

You can apply for both at the same time, but you'll get the passport sooner, unless the government shutdown changes this ;) You need photocopies for the N-600 and originals for the passport, so you should be able to apply for the N-600 concurrent to the passport application. I think it is good to do both processes, and sooner rather than later when the burden of proof of documents is smaller.
