Passport not received, need to travel

hello guys,
I took my oath last week in LA and I applied for the passport the same day after the oath.
I applied for expedited process with overnight delivery.
I thought the passport will arrive before I travel, however, there is only one business day left before my travel date next wednesday.
I m going back to my home country to attend the wedding of my sister so I can not reschedule the trip.
would I run into any trouble if I leave the US without GC or US passport
I can have the US passport mailed to me in Egypt so I can enter the US. Is this OK?
appreciate your feedback
thanks

you should have to apply your passport in the regional passport office because you can get it in the same day. the passport you apply thru the expedited process with overnight delivery's turn around time is around 2 weeks or so.

Thanks for the info, my naturalization certificate is not with me, I submitted it with the expedited application.
There is no way I do the same day application without it I think,
besides I already applied for one passport so I do not think it is legal to apply twice
thanks,

I wouldn't be too sure about having a pp mailed internationally. I know nothing about Egypt, but once I sent some important doc (though not a pp) by express airmail to a friend of mine in Rome upon his request. It never got there! I heard later on that Italy's mail system is corrupt (no offense to Italian people!) My friend or I should have known better!! I hope you get your pp tomorrow, but if not, I don't know what else you can do..

“would I run into any trouble if I leave the US without GC or US passport”

First off, if you are now a US citizen then why are you even asking a silly question about leaving without “GC”? Isn’t your GC was taken back by USCIS at the time of oath ceremony? Once a person becomes a US citizen, s/he is no more a green card holder. Means-GC is out of picture. So, don’t even talk about GC anymore.

Secondly, under immigration laws, you should have your US passport to travel in and out of US. How would you leave without any passport? You cannot use Egyptian passport anymore after becoming a US citizen unless Egypt allows dual citizenship, which I don’t know at this time.

“can have the US passport mailed to me in Egypt so I can enter the US”

It’s against the law to transport a US passport in or out of US in the mail. Each mail from Oversees or to Oversees is screened very carefully by US govt. If govt. would find out about this if you try to do this, you will be charged for a crime. So, you cannot ask anyone to mail a US passport to you in Egypt.

You should have visited in person to Regional passport office, which is close to your area if you really wanted to have passport before your travel date. Now, you have no other choice except just to wait for a US passport to arrive in the mail. However, you may try to find out where your passport application was sent. And then you may go there in person and make a personal request to issue you a passport right there and then. If supervisor of that office were nice, s/he may track your application there and may process it right away, but you must need to convince your situation. Otherwise, you have no other choice just to postpone your trip until you receive your passport.

passport date of birth

I reside in bangalore and I got my passport done six years ago. Only after a few years did I realise that the date of birth in my passport is wrong. my actual date of birth is 2, may 1975 but in the passport it says 8, january 1975. As I had no plans to go out of the country that time I did not bother to go and rectify it. But now I think I will need to go out what do you think the procedure will be. Do I have to file an affidavit?

appreciate a reply

Apply for a new passport at the Consulate/Embassy with a certified copy of Birth certificate (if born in the US), or with the original naturalization certificate. You may want to send an email to Indian Embassy in New Delhi. They are pretty good with helping the US Citizens living abroad. I would do this in person either at the Consulate/Embassy.

Just to add - I am not even sure if he can leave the country with an Egyptian passport. As a US citizen, I think US regards him only as an American. Fact that US tolerates dual citizenship does not mean you can enter or leave US with other passports but US. To explain more, I think the sequence of events on the airport will be:

1. They will ask for your passport and than when they see foreign passport they will ask you for I-94.

2. You will say that you do not have one since you had green card. Than they will ask for green card

3. Once you tell them you do not have green card, but you are a citizen, they will ask for US passport that you do not have.

So I am not sure what the situation here will be. But basically, as anybody else, you can not leave the country or enter it without a passport for overseas travels. It will be difficult for the people at the airport to establish that you are a US citizen, or that you are not an Egyptian who claims he is was a permanent resident without a green card. Yoru stamp in passport that shows your permanent residency status has probably expired.

So, you just have to wait for US passport, to leave and enter the country properly as any other American.

Received Passport

Hello
I just want to inform the group, I did travel to Egypt with my Egyptian passport, my US passport arrived by mail couple of days after I left
A friend travelling back to Egypt brought the passport.
At check in I was asked to fill an I94, I mentioned I was a US citizen, but the person at checkin just insisted I sign it.

Wow, buddy Nobal. You really took a huge chance there, and it worked out for you. Good luck, but try not to take such chances again in this day and age of aggressive screening and checking
