Passport not ready Yet

What to do if my passport is not ready before the interview?
Can i go in with a receipt from the consular that i have applied for a passport? Will my interview be automatically denied because of it?
For people from some underdeveloped nation will know how difficult and awful it is to get passport on time.
 
If the interview is outside the US, the passport is mandatory. But if it is inside the US, if you have another valid ID like a driver's license or state ID you should be OK.
