Passport issues

My son's passport expires next year. Is it a must to get it extended to retain the PR status?

Also, my passport expires in 2006 and that completes 10years duration. As I know, it would be a fresh application for totally a new passport(of course, based on the old one). I don't know how long it will take to get that, with all the new changes going on in the processing of passports in India.

My idea is, if it is not a mandatory document for the naturalization/citizenship, I can relax on these passport issues.

I appreciate the experiences and opinions of the members of this forum

You need a passport to travel. Expiring passports have NO impact on your PR status.
Applying for a new passport after 10 years is quite straight-forward. It takes less than 30 days (some cases 1-2 days) to get a new passport in any indian consulate in US.
I got my new passport (after 10 years life on old passport) in 1 day, applied on morning, got it same day evening at the indian consulate in San francisco.

Thanks!!!

nkm-oct23,

Thanks for the info. How many days before the expiry should you approach the consulate?

Re: Thanks!!!

You should check this with any indian consulate but should be before 1 year after expiration.

For Indian passport, you can apply for a new one any time from one year before the expiry to 6 months after expiry.

For an Indian Passport, you can actually apply for a new passport
upto 1 YEAR prior to the expiry of the old one.
I read this on the Indian Consulate's web site.

30 days?

I got my passport renewed last January, it was
6 months short of the expiry date. It had been valid for 10 years. Took only a day to get it renewed (had gone personally).
