Passport expiry and effect on status

Is a permanent resident out of status if their passport expires and they did not renew it on time? The greencard is valid for 8 more years.

Your immigration status and passport validity are not connected. Validity of passport comes to question only at POE. After that when you are in USA (either as PR or in non-immigrant visa), USCIS does not care about your passport and its validity.
